This explains what meter.ng collects, why, and who else sees it. It covers the meter.ng website and app, operated by The Meter Nigeria Limited, Abuja.
What we collect
- Your phone number — this is your account. We use it to send login codes and delivery messages.
- Your name, if you give it. It appears on your receipts and helps our team identify you if you contact support.
- Your email address, only if you set up a wallet account number. Our payment provider requires it to create one.
- Your meter number, and the registered name, address and tariff band your DisCo returns when we verify it.
- Your transactions — amounts, dates, tokens issued and units delivered.
We do not collect or store your card details. When you pay by card, that happens inside Paystack's own secure checkout and the card number never reaches our servers.
Why we hold it
- To verify your meter with your DisCo and deliver the electricity you paid for.
- To send you your token and payment confirmations.
- To let AutoPower estimate when your meter will run out, if you switch it on.
- To keep your transaction history so you can find an old token.
- To meet our record-keeping obligations as a business handling payments.
Who else sees it
To deliver the service we pass specific data to companies that carry out part of it. Each receives only what that job requires.
- iRecharge / Accelerate — your meter number and purchase amount, to verify the meter and vend the token.
- Paystack — your email and payment amount, to process card payments and provide your wallet account number.
- HollaTags — your phone number and message content, to deliver login codes and tokens by SMS.
We don't sell your data, and we don't share it for advertising. We may disclose information where the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Transaction records are kept for as long as we're required to hold financial records. Your account details are kept while your account is open. If you want your account closed, email us and we'll tell you what we can delete and what we're obliged to retain.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, you can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it's wrong, or ask us to delete it where we're not required to keep it. Email hello@meter.ng and we'll respond.
